A house painter and decorator is a tradesman responsible for the interior painting and exterior painting and decorating of homes and other buildings. The purpose of painting is to not only make them look better, but also protect them from damage by water, rust, corrosion, insects or mould.

One of the most important innovations in the painting industry has been computerized paint scanners that formulate new paints to match the often faded color of existing paints. They can also be used to match fabric colors, flowers or another desired source. Today, most chain stores offer machines that can provide color matching service. Modern paints are even available now in various formulations that can be fade resistant, chip resistant, odor free, antibiotic to resist mould and fungi growth, etc.

New innovations also allow for surfaces where a very smooth surface is desired. Inexpensive chemicals (better than paint thinner) can be purchased to better make the paint flow or lay flat. There have also been improvements in primer, which penetrates into the pores of wood, and allows the finish coat to adhere to the underlying primer. Priming also usually results in less paint being needed. For unpainted wood, most inexperienced do-it-yourself handymen expect to apply two coats of paint. However, one coat of inexpensive primer and then a finish coat can be much less expensive.

When painting metal surfaces, the proper primer is needed to resist corrosion, prevent impact chipping or improve adhesion of the finish coat.
